The two main methods for synthesizing spinel are sintering and electrofusion. Most spinel materials are made from high-purity synthetic alumina and chemically grade magnesium oxide, which are sintered in a shaft kiln and fused in an electric arc furnace. The advantage of sintered magnesia alumina spinel is that this process is a continuous ceramic process, which controls the feeding speed and balanced temperature distribution in the kiln to produce a very uniform crystal size of 30-80 μ M and products with low porosity (<3%).


The production of magnesium aluminum spinel using the electric melting method is a representative intermittent operation. Large casting blocks require extended cooling time, and the cooling of the casting blocks leads to uneven microstructure. Due to rapid cooling, the external spinel crystals are smaller than the internal ones, and low melting point impurities are concentrated in the center. Therefore, it is necessary to sort and homogenize the raw materials of the electric melting magnesium aluminum spinel.


Another advantage of using high-purity raw materials to produce aluminum magnesium spinel is the low impurity content (MgO A1203>99%) in the aluminum magnesium spinel aggregate, especially the low SiO2 content, which makes it have good high-temperature performance. Alumina based aluminum magnesium spinel has better performance than synthesized alumina based aluminum magnesium spinel, and can only be used in areas with low requirements for corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.
